Wheelin' Sportsmen Magazine from the National Wild Turkey Federation is "dedicated to the education and entertainment of disabled outdoors enthusiasts" and partners.

Discover the Barrier-Free Frontier

The barrier-free frontier is what Wheelin' Sportsmen magazine is all about. Some of the recent cover story titles and photos give it away:

  • Summer 2007 - Access Alaska, Discover the Barrier-Free Frontier, with a picture of a whale leaping from the ocean in a spray of water
  • Spring 2007 - Paralyzing Accident to Paddling Achievement, photo of a solo canoeist on a peaceful lake at sunset
  • Winter 2007 - Big Game Hunting with ALS, and
  • Special Section - Celebrating Our Newest Heroes, From Wounded Warriors to Recovery in the Outdoors, picture of a soldier in camoflage.

Wheelin' Sportsmen is More Than Hunting and Fishing

Published by the Wheelin' Sportsmen Program of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Wheelin' Sportsmen magazine may sound like it's only for hunters and fishers. Not so! This magazine takes the reader into the outdoors with its many beautiful photos and numerous suggestions for enjoying outdoor living, no matter what one's interests there may be.

Practical Advice for People With Disabilities and People Without

One of the many things Wheelin' Sportsmen does very well is to provide information and advice that is inclusive. It is not limited to persons with disabilities, nor to any particular sort of disabilities. As the name would suggest, there is always useful material for anyone who uses a wheelchair, but this extends to those with other mobility issues, and disabilities or special needs of all sorts. Many of the articles are useful to everyone, for example,

  • Kids and Fishing - Inexpensive Ways to Get a Child Hooked
  • If Outdoorsmen Planned Weddings (in the Funny Business section)
  • Buying Guide for Used Electric Wheelchairs (Winter 2007 issue)

Even the Advertisements are Informative

The short ads in the "Gear Up" section of the Spring 2007 issue included products for

  • dog owners - a dog collar with a light, and a travel water dish
  • people who eat food - camping food of the one-pot meal sort
  • people who use wheelchairs - colourful "grip covers you can change like shoes and wash like socks".

The larger stand-alone ads in the Summer 2007 issue included

  • rugged radio with features allowing quiet use, so as not to disturb the wildlife (Motorola T9550XLR)
  • TerraTrek outdoor wheelchairs available with rod and rifle holders and off-road wheel sets
  • Dixie Chopper, "The World's Fastest Lawn Mower"
  • Guns, hunting knives, and other hunting, fishing and outdoor equipment
  • Tripods suitable for use from a standing or seated position, including some that fit on wheelchairs
  • "Handicap Deer Stand" that raises a seated person to 10 feet four inches height, with or without a wheelchair.

In Winter 2007 there was an ad from mobility-usa.com for amazing looking rugged power wheelchairs for muddy outdoor tracks. The many suppliers who advertise in Wheelin' Sportsmen can probably answer any question about using manual or power wheelchairs in the outdoors, and where to get suitable wheelchair ramps, accessories and even wheelchair lifts for hunting.
